Space images

A lot of people don't realize that just about every space image produced by NASA is in the public domain. In other words, if I wanted to take a Hubble photo and use it as the backdrop for this blog, I could. Now I see that a couple of companies have found a clever way to make money off this little tidbit. SkyImage Lab and SpaceImages.com both provide (presumably) high quality prints of these photos, suitable for framing, or in some cases, already framed. I haven't dealt with them, but I'm thinking about that photo printer I bought my wife for Christmas last year...

Thank you for mentioning the availability of NASA photos from SpaceImages. When I started this company more than ten years ago, it was almost impossible for the average Joe or Jane to obtain any NASA photo. There were cheap 8x10 lithographs and posters of a few selected views. The goal then and now is to provide easy access to any NASA photo in any format and any size. Over the years we also opted to provide the highest quality product available, as other companies were beginning to provide a larger selection of poster products. I have always informed customers who were interested, that many high resolution views are now available online. Unfortunately many of those files, especially from older missions, can require hours of image processing to produce a decent enlargement. In many cases I pay NASA to scan the film for me. In light of all the sources for NASA photos that are out there now, I would encourage readers to consider exactly how the prints are made in relation to the use they will make of them. Of course all the photos on my website are available for free download at screen resolution.
